How to Use Ayurvedic Hair Oils for Summer Hair Protection and Restoration

Summer brings sunshine, warmth, and longer days — but it can also take a toll on your hair. From intense heat and UV exposure to sweat and humidity, your scalp and strands are under pressure.

If you're a natural remedy enthusiast looking for holistic ways to protect your hair, Ayurveda offers time-tested solutions using cooling herbs and nourishing hair oils to keep your hair strong, healthy, and radiant during the summer months.

🌿 Why Summer Causes Hair Problems, According to Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, each season is governed by a dosha—or bioenergy. Summer is dominated by Pitta dosha, which is linked to heat, fire, and transformation. When Pitta becomes aggravated due to heat, it can lead to:

  • Excess oil production
  • Scalp irritation or inflammation
  • Hair fall and thinning
  • Premature greying
  • Dandruff or dryness after sweating

The key to summer hair care is pacifying Pitta through cooling, hydrating, and soothing herbs and oils.

🪔 Top Ayurvedic Hair Oils to Protect and Nourish Hair in Summer

Massaging your scalp with the right Ayurvedic hair oil once or twice a week helps cool the scalp, improve blood circulation, and reduce heat-related damage.

Best Oils to Use:

  • Neelybringadi Oil – Known as the “king of herbs” for hair, Neelybringadi strengthens roots and supports hair growth.
  • Coconut Oil – using neat coconut oil is naturally cooling and deeply moisturizing, it’s ideal for combating heat damage. In the UK climate on its own Coconut Oil can be too heavy. Our Neelybringadi is combined with sesame oil and coconut oil making it more suitable for the UK climate as well as being an authentic Ayurvedic product.
  • Organic Brahmi Oil – Calms the nervous system, reduces stress, and supports healthy hair follicles. It is said to prevent greying of the hair. We sell both Brahmi oil and Neelybringadi oil (which contains some Brahmi), if you need extra support for your nervous system then we recommend Brahmi oil.
  • Neem Oil– our neem oil is made with neem leaf, this gives it a lovely soothing quality. Used in a localised way on the scalp it can help to combat itchy, red sore patches.

🧴 How to Use:  Gently warm your chosen oil, pour into your hands and massage gently into your scalp for 5–10 minutes. For Neelybringadi, oil should be worked through the hair from root to tip; alternatively, the oil can be combed through to ensure an even distribution is achieved, and then leave on for 30–60 minutes.  You may wish to put a shower cap on to further enhance the oil penetration. When it is time to wash it out lightly wet your hair and then massage in a lot of shampoo, rinse and repeat a second time.
