February can feel like a hard trudge, one foot most definitely in winter and the other tentatively promising the awakening of spring. The cold and dry qualities of Vata are still present, especially in the sharp frosty mornings. Kapha is accumulating too, we can feel it in the damp, cold, cloudy days which feel hard work and we just want to hibernate.

Digestion slows down and the heavy food we have enjoyed over winter previously may now feel heavy and contribute to feeling sluggish and tired in the morning. Our quality of sleep might alter and our energy levels fluctuate, some days feeling energetic and others bring fatigue. February is a time to strengthen our digestive fire with warming foods, herbs and lifestyle habits, nurturing ourselves for the remains of winter and gently preparing for spring.

Ayurvedic Tips for February

1. Eat Warm, Cooked Foods

  • Plenty of soups, stews, khichari, and warm meals to support digestive fire.
  • Use ghee in your meals to lubricate the intestines and aid digestion.

2. Use Digestive Spices

  • Add ginger, black pepper, cumin, ajwain, hing (asafoetida), cinnamon, and turmeric to your food.
  • Drinking ginger tea or cumin-fennel tea helps in reducing bloating and gas.

3. Drink Warm Water

  • Sip warm water or herbal teas throughout the day to prevent sluggish digestion.
  • Avoid iced or cold beverages, as they slow down metabolism.

4. Have a Light Dinner

  • Eat your heaviest meal at lunchtime when digestion is strongest.
  • Dinner should be light and warm, eaten at least 2-3 hours before bedtime.

5. Stay physically active

  • Brisk walks, dancing, sun salutations help combat sluggishness
  • Wake up early, 6am or before to help boost metabolism

6. Practice Abhyanga (Oil Massage)

  • Massage your abdomen with warm sesame oil before bathing to calm Vata and promote digestion.

7. Try Ayurvedic Herbs

  • Triphala at night helps in detoxifying and improving digestion.
  • Hingwastak before meals aids in reducing bloating and gas.
