As the days grow longer and the first signs of spring appear, Ayurveda invites us to pause and listen to nature's cues. In the ancient wisdom of this 5,000-year-old healing tradition, spring is Kapha season a time when the heavy, cool, and moist qualities that accumulated through winter begin to thaw and move. This is nature's own detox, and with a little guidance, we can support our bodies through it beautifully.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about an Ayurvedic spring cleanse: why it matters, how to prepare, what to eat, daily routines to adopt, and a gentle 7-day protocol to get you started.

Why Spring Is the Perfect Time to Cleanse

In Ayurveda, the seasons are shifts in the fundamental qualities (or gunas) that govern our bodies and minds. Winter accumulates Kapha (earth and water): heaviness, sluggishness, congestion, and excess moisture. When spring arrives, that accumulated Kapha begins to liquefy, which is why so many of us experience seasonal allergies, sinus congestion, low energy, and a general feeling of heaviness at this time of year.

A spring cleanse works with this natural movement, helping the body clear out what it no longer needs. This is done gently, sustainably and in harmony with the season.

Signs You May Benefit from a Spring Cleanse

  • Feeling sluggish or heavy upon waking
  • Seasonal congestion, sinus pressure, or allergies
  • Digestive sluggishness or bloating
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Skin that feels dull or congested
  • Low motivation or mild low mood
  • Cravings for heavy, sweet, or salty foods

If several of these resonate, your body is likely asking for a reset. Interestingly these symptoms are also present when there is a sluggishness in liver function.

The Principles of an Ayurvedic Spring Cleanse

Our Ayurvedic cleanse here at Essential Ayurveda is nourishing and gradual. It works on three levels: digestion, elimination, and daily routine. Here's how to approach each one.

1. Kindle Your Digestive Fire (Agni)

In Ayurveda, strong digestion is the cornerstone of good health. When agni (digestive fire) is robust, we process food, emotions, and experiences efficiently. When it's weak, toxins called ama accumulate. Spring cleansing is largely about clearing ama and rekindling agni.

Start each morning with a cup of warm water with fresh lemon and a pinch of ginger. Eat your largest meal at midday when agni is naturally strongest, and keep evening meals light and easy to digest.

2. Support Cleansing with Herbal Formulas

Ayurveda has a rich tradition of using herbs to support the body's natural cleansing processes. These are some of our most trusted formulas for spring:

Liv Balance  Liv Balance is designed to gently promote the function of the liver and gall bladder. This formula brings together bitter, intelligent botanicals to stimulate bile flow, ease digestive stagnation, and help the body process daily load with more clarity and lightness. It helps to cleanse excess Pitta and Kapha without aggravating Vata.

Guggul Formula helps clear ama and excess kapha while supporting digestion and metabolic flow. Included as part of a cleanse, it brings movement back to the system, so what’s been held can be release and the body can return to a lighter, more responsive state. Guggul is known as a channel clearer, heating in nature but in this formula we counterbalance the heat with herbs making it suitable for all three doshas. It is also great for reducing inflammation.

Organic Triphala is perhaps the most celebrated Ayurvedic formula for gentle, daily cleansing. A blend of three fruits; Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki, Triphala supports healthy bowel function, tones the digestive tract and is rich in antioxidants. Unlike harsh laxatives, it works gradually and can be taken long-term. It's our bestselling product for good reason, and a cornerstone of any spring cleanse.

Bright Mood can be taken to support the motivation and staying power of a cleanse. The liver is closely linked to emotional wellbeing, supporting it can also uplift how you feel mentally. If you’ve been experiencing irritability, low mood, or brain fog,Bright Mood works alongside liver support to bring lightness and clarity back to your day.

After you have completed your cleanse you can move to the strengthening phase and for this we love Chyawanprash. It is herbal elixir that strengthens and conditions the body, supporting immunity.

Chyawanprash is a traditional Ayurvedic jam made from Amalaki (Indian gooseberry) and a blend of over 40 herbs and spices. While it's best known as a rejuvenating tonic, it also supports immunity and provides antioxidant protection making it an excellent companion after a cleanse.

3. Embrace Cleansing Teas

Warm herbal teas are a wonderful way to support your cleanse throughout the day. They keep digestion moving, provide warmth (important for balancing Kapha's cool quality), and offer their own therapeutic benefits.

Our Detox Supergreen Tea is a beautifully crafted blend designed to support the body's natural cleansing processes. Rich in chlorophyll and antioxidants, it's a wonderful morning or midday tea during a spring cleanse.

Lemongrass & Ginger Tea is warming, digestive, and refreshing — perfect for kindling agni (digestive fire) and supporting circulation. Ginger is one of Ayurveda's most important digestive herbs, and lemongrass adds a bright, uplifting quality that feels perfectly suited to spring.

Dietary Guidance for Spring

Food is medicine in Ayurveda, and spring calls for a lighter, warmer, and more stimulating diet to counterbalance Kapha's heavy, cool qualities.

Favour These Foods

  • Warm, cooked meals - soups, kitchari, steamed vegetables, light dahls
  • Bitter and astringent tastes - leafy greens, rocket, dandelion, asparagus, artichoke, pea shoots and watercress.
  • Pungent spices - ginger, black pepper, turmeric, cumin, coriander, mustard seeds
  • Light grains - barley, millet, quinoa, basmati rice
  • Legumes - red lentils, mung beans, chickpeas
  • Honey (raw, in small amounts) - the only sweetener considered Kapha reducing in Ayurveda

Reduce or Avoid

  • Heavy, oily, or fried foods
  • Dairy (especially cold dairy like ice cream or cold milk)
  • Refined sugar and processed foods
  • Cold drinks and raw foods in excess
  • Wheat and heavy grains
  • Excessive salt

The Kitchari Cleanse

For a deeper cleanse, consider eating kitchari a simple, nourishing porridge of split mung beans and basmati rice cooked with digestive spices as your main meal for several days. Kitchari is considered tridoshic (balancing for all constitutions) and is easy to digest, giving your system a genuine rest while still providing complete nutrition. Add seasonal vegetables and a generous amount of warming spices.

Your Daily Spring Routine (Dinacharya)

In Ayurveda, daily routine Dinacharya is considered one of the most powerful tools for health. A consistent, seasonally appropriate routine helps regulate the body's natural rhythms and supports the cleansing process.

Morning Practices

  • Rise early ideally before 6am, before Kapha time begins. Rising at this time gives you a lighter, more energised start to the day.
  • Tongue scraping use a copper or stainless steel tongue scraper to remove ama (toxins) that accumulate on the tongue overnight. This is one of the simplest and most effective daily detox practices.
  • Oil pulling swish a tablespoon of our Mint Mouth Ritual in your mouth for 5 minutes, then spit it out. This traditional practice supports oral health and is said to draw toxins from the body.
  • Warm water with lemon and ginger before anything else, drink a cup of warm water to stimulate digestion and elimination.
  • Abhyanga (self-massage) see below for full instructions.
  • Yoga or movement spring is an excellent time to increase physical activity. Kapha responds well to vigorous, energising movement. Sun salutations, brisk walking, or cycling are all wonderful.
  • Meditation even 5-10 minutes of quiet sitting helps clear mental amaand set a calm, clear intention for the day.

Abhyanga, The Art of Ayurvedic Self-Massage

Abhyanga; warm oil self-massage is one of Ayurveda's most beloved daily practices, and it's particularly beneficial during a cleanse. It stimulates the lymphatic system (a key part of the body's detoxification network), nourishes the skin, calms the nervous system, and promotes the movement of toxins towards the digestive tract for elimination.

For spring, we recommend using Cured Organic Sesame Oilor our Kapha Oil. Sesame oil is warming and grounding perfect for balancing Kapha's cool, heavy qualities. Our oil is traditionally cured using an Ayurvedic process that enhances its therapeutic properties.

How to Practise Abhyanga

  1. Warm the oil by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes.
  2. Begin at the crown of the head, massaging in circular motions.
  3. Move to the face, ears, and neck.
  4. Use long strokes on the limbs (arms and legs) and circular strokes on the joints (shoulders, elbows, knees, hips).
  5. Massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction, following the path of the large intestine.
  6. Don't forget the feet they are particularly important in Ayurveda.
  7. Leave the oil on ideally for at least 15–20 minutes before showering with warm (not hot) water.
  8. Practise daily, ideally in the morning before your shower.

Even 10 minutes of self-massage makes a meaningful difference. Think of it as a daily act of self-love that also happens to be deeply therapeutic. Sneha is what we call oil in Ayurveda and this also means love.

A Gentle 7-Day Spring Cleanse Protocol

This protocol is designed to be accessible and sustainable enabling a gentle, intentional reset that supports your body's natural intelligence in alignment with nature's natural intelligence.

Before You Begin (Days 1–2): Preparation

Gradually reduce caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and processed foods. Begin taking Triphalaeach evening (typically 1–2 tablets or ½ tsp powder in warm water before bed). Start your morning warm water ritual and tongue scraping. This preparation phase makes the cleanse much more comfortable and effective.

The Cleanse (Days 3–7): Active Cleansing

After the Cleanse: Reintegration

Gradually reintroduce foods over 2–3 days. Notice how your body responds to different foods — this is valuable information about what truly nourishes you. Continue with Triphala and your morning routine as long-term practices. Many people find that the habits established during a cleanse become the foundation of a genuinely transformed daily life.

A Note on Listening to Your Body

Ayurveda is ultimately a deeply personal system. While these guidelines are rooted in thousands of years of wisdom, you are the expert on your own body. If something doesn't feel right, adjust it. If you have a chronic health condition or are pregnant, please consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or your GP before undertaking a cleanse.

A spring cleanse doesn't need to be perfect to be powerful. Even small, consistent changes like a cup of warm water in the morning, a daily walk, a handful of herbs can create meaningful steps over time.
